Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.)

Interactions

Fennel/Drug Interactions:
  • Anticoagulant drugsAnticoagulant drugs: Ferula communis (giant fennel) contains a potent anticoagulant and induces severe hemorrhagic diathesis in grazing ewes, or similar changes in utero in lambs (30). This may potentiate the effects of other anticoagulants.
  • Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®)Ciprofloxacin (Cipro®): Concurrent use of fennel and ciprofloxacin may lead to decreased bioavailability of ciprofloxacin. Fennel contains high amounts of minerals and the formation of a ciprofloxacin cation complex results. This formation reduces ciprofloxacin absorption. Simultaneous use of these agents leads to an 83% reduction in ciprofloxacin Cmax while Tmax remains unaffected. The total clearance of ciprofloxacin is increased 20-fold. There is a reduction in the volume of distribution and area under the curve, and the elimination half-life is prolonged 2.7 fold (31). Theoretically, fennel may also interfere similarly with other fluoroquinolone antibiotics.

Fennel/Herb/Supplement Interactions:
  • Anticoagulant herbs & supplementsAnticoagulant herbs & supplements: Theoretically, fennel may increase the effects of anticoagulant herbs and supplements.
